WITH WHICH SUPPORTS MODEL CARS ARE VARNISHED

In the beginning I want to mention that I did not learn any varnishing-buiseness, I made my experiences only step by step by trying to varnish my cars myself. But a great help is my fellow, varnisher Ewald H., who allways anwers any questions concerning varnishing

My first thing I varnished, was a Starter-kit of Revell.

Bild

No thats not completely correct, my very first experiences I made far back, when I used brushes and aerosols J But the Starter-kit of Revell inherits a crude pistole with a can on his top, for the air supply, ca. 30Euro. What can I say – the result looked much better than the brush-paintings backwards.

(For example: the Countach and the MG and the Oldtimer are varnished with the Starter-kit of Revell). It’s so much fun varnishing my cars by myself, either after real examples or after my own ideas. But constatly it’s very espensiv to buy one conpressed-air-can after on other (8Euro a peace) So this problem raised a new question: How am I going to go on??
A possibility would be a truck-tube for saving air, on other alternative would be a conpressed-air-bottle for refilling. In both cases, I would have to go to the pit-stop for air-filling, but it would be a soundless way at home. On the other hand, what happens if the pit-stop is closed or is away??? So I looked for a compressor. At a building center I would pay ca. 80Euro for a no-name-product, or 180Euro for a brand-compressor (with acompressed-air-accumulator) in this case there is the facility to connect the airgun and refill car-hubes, connect tacker ..... But those compressors are very loud, ca96dB .... now you would maybe have a problem with your neigbour L) But the only chance to avoid this problem, is buing a special airbrush-compressor, which very low, but costs 250Euro upwards.
After my frirst esperiences, I decided to make a comprmise: I bought a brand-compressor with an accumulator with an acustic pressure of 96dB.

So I do have to be cenciderate of my neighbour but there aren’t so much cars at once! No problems.
Acually I use different guns: a SATA with a 0,5-diffuser for complete paintings

a EVOLUTION with a 0,2-diffuser for small areas or stripes

like the flames on the hot-rod:

Another one is from Schneider Druckluft, which I only use for clearcoat. I use this with a 0,5-diffuser because the 0,7 one was to big. It's very important that the gun is clean because you can see every little dirt-piece in the clearcoat. After I used one off my airbrush-guns, I disassemble it completely, esxpecially the clearcoat gun. From time to time a put the whole gun in a bottle of thinner so the dirt which is still in the gun can lift. After that you won't have any dirt in the gunand so the cars will looksmooth and clean.

Bild

That's what I use as my clearcoat. After I varnished a car and put the decals on, I use mipa clearcoat.

The gun of the Revell-Starter-kit still is in use for varnishing decals bevor appying them. This gun now has a adapter to connect it with the compressor.

While searching for the right adapter I find the perfect homepage: Unholzer All my questions were asked in details an all necessary peaces could be delivered. Perfect consultation of a speciallist dealer.

Maybe you ask yourself, what paints are used? There are much different ones: on the one hand I used water-basic-paints (less solvents), on the other hand paints, which contraining solvents.

Selfmade decals are printed on a inkjet printer, and this ink is water-soluble L !!! Everyone knows the result of a water-drop on a printing-document, everything flows. So i have to protect them with clear-varnish. And this clear-varnish musn’t be an water-sluble, so I use Revell-clear-varnish. For painting the car I often usw Tamiya colors.

Bild

But I also use original car-varnishes. Especially if a car is produced in the original color.

Bild

For example:Red nose Day DTM-car of Stefan Mücke, which I am going to varnished next.
Stop, this car is already presented on my page, isn’t is?! But in the wrong color. I connected myself to Stefan Mücke and asked him, if he could tell me the right color. Of course, the answer returns imediatly!

You can find more news about Red Nose Day under the link DTM MODELLS.

I bought two new airbrush guns with which I'm sill learning.

Bild

But I'm not convinced yet. You could say that the gun is a little bit raw and the way of painting isn't exactely what I want. But when the paint is dry it looks smooth. So you don't know whether the paintjob will be good or not while you're painting. I bought these guns because I want to have seperata guns for bright and for dark colors so cleaning the guns will be more easy. So we will see what the future brings...I won't quit painting because it's a lot of fun and also a challenge for me.
Here I want to show some more tools which help me while I'm painting. The first thing is the so called "third-hand". You can stick little parts or a whole body on it and can turn the parts withut touching them.

Bild

The second tool is a normal plastic bottle. Also very practical. And when you fill it with water it's also stable.

Bild

Here you can see some different masking tapes which I use. Be carefull which tapes you buy and just use special masking tapes for your paintjobs.

Bild

And the most important thing: Watch yourself and use special clothing like a breathing protection and gloves!
