Ferrari 512S #10

of Gelo Racing Team / North American Racing Team

Another Le Mans 1970 racer is going to be build, driven by Helmut Kelleners and Georg Loos.

Basic was the Ferrari 512 from fly, which had to be changed in the same way like the Ferrari #16, that means that the white engine cover has to be replaced by an transparent one and the hole between the back lights had to be closed. Experiences of the first changing would be helpful and the way of varnishing was overworked (now I use another sticky tape).

In this report I will take a look on the several changing and the use of different materials. First the complete car hast to be deconstructed.

(Attention this pic is from a 512 Coda Lunga)

Here you can see the completely deconstructed car, which lost his sponsors and is already grinded. A rubbing-cleaner out of the kitchen could be very helpful to remove the grinding-remains. Only after cleaning and drying you can see the final result.

Now you may ask your self one question: Out of what material did I make the transparent engine cover??? It hast to be arced and robust…??!!

Afterwards the hole between the rear lights had to be closed, grinded and primed. Attention: always be aware of the right air-condition while working with any varnish products, because of the unhealthy gases. That's why I prefer water based varnish. For grinding I use wet grinding paper; its helpful to put it a few minutes before grinding into water and while grinding always work together with water, you will have a much better result.

Here you can see the two-composed glue, the grinding and the spackle.

The hole is closed and the rear is revarnished. Now its time for varnishing the golden stripes, the collateral flaps and the new cover.

For masking I prefer to use the special cover band "Gold 1 9mm x 50 m of scotch". Characteristically it is very easy to remove, doesn't damage the varnish, is very flexible and perfect for covering beadings. For smaller parts I approve "Tamiya Mskin Tape 10 mm". For covering bigger areas I use old papers or laminations.

The attentive reader might recognize that the project #10 didn't go on for a wile. I was urged to find out what sponsor is located over the front lights. I only have one picture of that car, which doesn't show any detail of that sponsor :-( I searched for some information in any forums; either in special slotcar forums nor in any recing forms, nobody knew this sponsor. a guy wrote, that he also searched for a long time for the right one, without success; and than he used a likewise decals. But for me that was no solution! I didn't gave up, although not even Patto (with his incredible huge pool of decals) could help me out.Later new pictures occurred, even one of the 911 was send to me :-) and I found out that the stripes around the decals look like a checkered flag. But what is standing upon it?

Excurse: in the last few days I surfed in some France forums and found a special thread over Le Mans 1970, where I found some new helpful pictures for another 911. Not even for #10, but it might be an helpful link while building some other models. Back to #10!

Some days later I got a picture and I red: KEIPER! And I thought: "Well I do know the name…yes!...Keiper-Recaro, producing racing seats, might be possible…!" I wrote an email and a few minutes later I got the answer: "Sorry, but we couldn't confirm the sponsor."

What a pitty! I started my image editor and created an own decal with the checkered flog on top and back with the letters Keiper… Nobody could even read this tiny word!

Now I want to thank everyone who conducted my way of searching. It was fun to read and se some results and stories ;)! but by the way: if anybody has some news, please let me know...
